I know I don't write much in here, but I am very passionate about this.
If you are registered to vote in California, I highly encourage you to Vote NO on Prop 8 tomorrow.
A vote for Prop 8 is a vote to discriminate against homosexual couples who simply want the same marriage rights as the rest of us. Many gay and lesbian couples have married legally in California in the past few months, and to deny this to them is, to me, a human rights travesty.
We are not a nation governed by religious beliefs. Allowing gay couples to marry will not destroy the sanctity of marriage [heaven knows it already has its problems], nor will it lead to people wanting to marry their pets or houseplants. It will not corrupt children and it will not encourage gay couples to sue churches who won't marry them.
What it will do, however, is grant the right of marriage to happy, secure and loving couples who want the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts, and I can't stress how necessary that is.
I am passionate about this because of my friends and my family who are affected by this right. It brings it home for me - why should some of my best friends have to deal with this? They shouldn't.
My dream is that more states will recognize gay marriage. I think doing so in California is a very big start.
